Étoffe de soie utilisée au Moyen Âge pour la confection des bannières, gonfanons et pennons. Huit aunes de cendal noir (DRUON, La Loi des mâles, 1957, p. 246).
Prononc. :[]. Homon. sandale. Étymol. et Hist. Ca 1150 (Thèbes, 9182 ds T.-L.). Empr. au lat. médiév. cendalum (Testamentum Everardi Comitio, ann. 837 ds DU CANGE s.v.) qui semble originaire du domaine ital. (cf. G. Alessio ds R. Ling. rom., t. 18, 1954, p. 65; A. Prati ds R.
